Our Story

Our Mission

To disrupt existing power structures that undermine feminist liberation, challenge structures of oppression and raise consciousness towards collective liberation through radical knowledge production, policy advocacy, decolonial feminist organising and the documentation of the cultural evolution of liberation in Africa.

Our Dream and Vision

The historical patterns of power in relation to knowledge, social order, thought and expression has constituted a hindrance to African thought, knowledge and radical organising. The rise of fundamentalist movements, shrinking of civic spaces and repression of the rights of women and gender-expansive persons especially in the global South and particularly in Africa calls us to rigorous intellectual and social resistance based on critical thinking.

Liberation Alliance Africa is a collective of African feminists on the continent and in diaspora working to disrupt the legacies of historical colonial inequalities and domination and its resulting harm using African feminist scholarship. We recognise that we cannot continue to live with the memories of others as ours and that our future will not be birthed in a vacuum. Therefore, we are called to explore newfrontiers, reimagine our individual and collective futures and sustain an alliance of conscious Africans raising our voices in resistance and celebration.

Our Soul Chants

People Over Process

At Liberation Alliance Africa, we believe in the prioritisation of people over processes and operate through a system that recognises productivity to include individual as well as collective happiness, joy and wellness.

Solidarity

To us, solidarity is about mobilising and unleashing our individual and collective power to build a world where there is peace, equality, respect for the Earth, and resources for the rights and wellbeing of all people — regardless of gender identity, race, nationality, ability, class, caste, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, or location.

Equality

At Liberation Alliance Africa, we understand that injustice and inequality is a symptom of unequal and exploitative power structures. Therefore, we will disrupt, resist and organise to democratise power by amplifying the voices of marginalised and minority groups.

Meaningful Inclusion

“We are not minorities, we have been minoritised, we are not under-represented, we have been historically excluded…” Meaningful inclusion to us is not benevolence, it is the relinquishing of power and resources to minoritised groups to shape their reality.

Service

We see ourselves as co-labourers for feminist liberation in Africa. Therefore, we will always be ready to serve, assist and collaborate for our collective goal.

Credibility

Our foundation is built on trustworthiness and character. We enjoin our communities to not only put their faith in us but trust alongside us as we envision and claim new liberatory feminist realities.

Love

At Liberation Alliance Africa, love is political. The act of loving is profound, inspiring us to move forward towards self-actualisation and communal aspirations for justice and liberation in the midst of a shrinking civic space and opportunities for freedom.

Learning

At Liberation Alliance Africa, we pledge a lifelong commitment to learning through our experiences, other feminist movements, emerging knowledge and practices in the building of our collective and organising efforts in Africa.
